The Crime Analysis Unit provides daily reports that monitor monthly trends in criminal activity; analyzes neighborhoods, patrol zones, and police service areas for spikes in crimes or patterns – as well as common themes such as targeted property or methods of conducting crime.
CAU conducts criminal intelligence and statistical analysis to serve the department’s operational and administrative needs utilizing a wide range of analytic tools and techniques, to include: next-hit predictions, criminal activity tracking/forecasting, summary statistics, link analyses, net worth assessments, criminal investigative analyses, psychological profiling, and geographical crime-mapping.
CAU publishes a Tactical Alert Bulletin twice a week, ensuring the entire department is sharing information to target Focus on Four problem areas. The analyst works closely with other jurisdictions – sharing information throughout the Hampton Roads area, and manages the Reverse 911 and Nixle community alert systems. The unit also tracks all our wanted posters and missing person posters to keep the information fresh and up-to-date.
