The Special Investigations Division consists of the Special Investigations Unit and the Gang Suppression Unit. The Special Investigations Division is responsible for conducting long term strategic investigations of major criminal activity in the City, and providing operational and tactical intelligence and surveillance assets to other Department Units. SID also includes detectives assigned to Federal Task Forces, and frequently conducts joint investigations with Federal agencies. The Division is commanded by a Lieutenant.
The Special Investigations Unit is principally responsible for the investigation of narcotics and vice activity in the City. The Unit conducts long term investigations and street level interdiction operations. The Unit also shares responsibility for deploying and maintaining surveillance equipment. The Unit is supervised by a Sergeant and staffed by ten Detectives.
The Gang Suppression Unit is primarily responsible for investigating gang and organized criminal activity in the City, and frequently conducts joint investigations with Federal agencies to bring many of its cases to trial in Federal court. The Unit also shares responsibility with SIU for deploying and maintaining surveillance equipment. The Unit provides educational presentations and training to various groups such as other law enforcement agencies, civic leagues, schools, and faith based organizations. The Unit is supervised by a Sergeant and is comprised of several Detectives.
