- The goal of the Professional Standards Unit is to ensure all complaints or allegations against the Portsmouth Police Department or any of its employees are investigated in a thorough, fair, and impartial manner. The rights of all citizens and employees of the Portsmouth Police Department shall be protected and confidentiality shall be maintained. The Professional Standards Unit strives to earn the trust and confidence of the citizens we proudly serve while maintaining the highest level of ethical behavior and integrity for the Portsmouth Police Department by identifying, recognizing, and resolving public safety concerns. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Professional Standards Unit if they wish to express either their satisfaction or disappointment concerning their interaction with a sworn or civilian employee of the Department.
- Complaints or compliments, regardless of nature, can be made at any time either in person, by mail, phone, fax, or online with the form on the home page. As part of the follow-up investigative process, persons making complaints will normally be contacted for an interview. Anonymous complaints will be investigated to the fullest extent possible. At the conclusion of an investigation, both the complainant and the Department member will be notified that the case is concluded and the findings of the investigation. The case files and any disciplinary action taken are considered confidential personnel matters and are exempt from disclosure under Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act. The Professional Standards Unit is commanded by a Lieutenant, and is staffed by a Sergeant, four Detectives, and an Administrative Assistant. The PSU Lieutenant reports directly to the Chief of Police.
